{Family Friendly Hike to Akaka Falls}

One of our favorite hikes in Hawaii’s Big Island was to Akaka Falls.

Surrounded by lush green vegetation, with only the sounds of nature filling the air, made for a majestic experience.

The short and relaxing hike was very beautiful, and to cap it off, the end result was a captivating waterfall.

It certainly was a win-win situation all around.

Making our way through the thick tropical setting, our kiddos kept stopping as they were constantly distracted by little insects crossing the path that they couldn’t keep from examining.

In addition to the insects, there were many uniquely shaped leafs that also captivated their attention.

While the 0.4 mile loop trail contains steps each way, the rest of the path is paved and easy to follow along.

Even with a few stops from our little scientist, and a few photo-ops, the hike was only a few minutes to the waterfall.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by the spectacular sight of the grand 442 foot Akaka Falls.

It was fun, thrilling and gorgeous!

Akaka Falls in Hawaii's Big Island is a great family hike.

I have never quite understood why the sight and sounds of waterfalls are so mesmerizing and magical, and this was no exception.

All I know is that the landscape surrounding this delightful landmark certainly made this place that much more intriguing and magical!

After a few minutes of taking it all in, we made our way back to the car and continued our journey around the island.

A Few Suggestions for Visiting Akaka Falls:

-Although a lot of the hike is paved and smooth there are steps leading up and down. If you are brining a little one consider a carrier over a stroller.

-There is a smaller waterfall along the way but if you want to skip that and go straight to the larger falls, stay left at the fork.

-This was a great pitstop for everyone to stretch their legs on our drive from Waikoloa to Hilo.

-The admission fee to the park is $5.00 per car or $1 per person for pedestrians.

This proved to be a definite must for an easy, family friendly quick stop for all to enjoy.
